Pet Cost Of Living Survey 2023 - Pet Parlour Australia

Pet Parlour recently conducted a cost-of-living survey of its 6,000 customers to see how inflation was affecting pet owners and their pets. The results showed that over 70% of customers agreed that inflation pressures had impacted their spending on their pets.

First, we looked at the number of pets per household, surprisingly 14% of households had over 5 pets.

Next, we asked customers if cost of living pressures had impacted on their pets. Worryingly over 73% agreed that this was the case with only 10% disagreeing with the statement.

When we segmented this data by states 77% agreed this was the case in South Australia, whilst only 68% agreed in Western Australia.

Customers were asked if they would spend less on their pets in 2023 then the did in 2022. These results were pretty evenly split with 40% agreeing and 35% disagreeing.

NSW agreed the most with this statement with 43% of customers selecting agree or above. At the other end of the scale was Victorians who only selcted agree or above in 33% of answers.

The fouth question asked if customers were concerned about being able to afford to feed their pets in 2023.

Only 33% of people said that they weren’t worried at all about being able to afford pet food.

Next was the most shocking result. The question was “How worried are you that you won’t be able to afford medical bills for your pets?”. Only 7% of people were not worried with more then 50% of people choosing a lot or above.

Finally, we had a freeform question that asked what was most concerning. There were lots of customers saying that they would cut back on their own need before the needs of their pets.

Overall we can see that the increased cost of living is having a big impact on pet owners in 2023. A large number of owners have said they will go without to ensure that their pets don't have to suffer.
