Horses are natural grazers, which means they instinctively find food on pastures and spend most of the day grazing. While getting all the requisite nutrients isn’t an issue for horses in the wild, animals under human care are a different matter altogether.
When you own one or more horses, you’re entirely responsible for their proper nutrition. This means you need to pay attention to the intake of all six main nutrient classes: vitamins, minerals, protein, carbs, fats, and, of course, water.
Due to their internal anatomy, horses have specific requirements regarding each class. Water is, unsurprisingly, the most important nutrient, but it’s also the easiest to regulate – simply ensure your horse always has a clean water supply nearby.
Other nutrients aren’t as straightforward. For instance, horses can’t process large quantities of fat. The usual fat percentage in horse diet is between 2% and 6%, with up to 12% representing a high-fat diet and 20% being the absolute maximum.
Like with other animals, carbs are the primary source of energy and protein promotes muscle growth and development. In addition to all this, horses also require a measured dose of fibre, which is crucial for gut health and digestion.
Finally, horses that work more, race, or are otherwise active will have particular nutritional needs. Fortunately, choosing the right feed for your horses doesn’t have to be overly complicated – you can find the exact feed to suit your animals with Pet Parlour.
Our store offers every type of horse feed. For example, Robinsons Lucerne Chaff is an excellent choice for a basic feed. But if you need a constant energy source that will last throughout the day, the slow-release Fiber Fresh Fiber Ezy will be just the feed.
On the other hand, if your horse needs a performance boost, Harrys Choice Competitor Oats will provide the right balance of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and fibre. In other words, whatever your horse needs to thrive, you’ll find it at Pet Parlour.
