Who Owns Royal Canin Dog Food?

It was her aim to acquire knowledge about dogs, taking into consideration their breed and life stage, to determine their health needs so they could create a nutrition tailored produced.

In the early stages of the company most of the growth was focused in Europe but that all changed after the company was bought by Mars in 2001. In Australia, Royal Canin's head office is located in Melbourne. Today, Royal Canin is a global leader when it comes to nutrition in dogs and cats and providing quality pet food.

How Long The Food Last Once Opened?

Royal Canin dry food will last 2 months if the bag is stored in a cool, dry, airtight container. If you are putting your kibble into a dog food bin it will last up to 6 weeks. So, what exactly is kibble? This type of dog food is ingredients that are ground up and shaped into pellets. The kibble shape can vary, depending on the brand. This dry dog food is a popular choice for many different breeds. Compared to the wet dog food variety, it can be a much better nutritional source for them.

Should I Add Water To Royal Canin Dog Food?

This is completely up to you. Some dogs definitely prefer a little more water to help them digest the dry dog food. But this isn't to say all dogs will like to eat it this way. It mostly comes down to a personal preference. When we feed our in-house tester, Wilfred Royal Canin, we do add a little bit of water to his dry food. It can be worth testing it out with your dog to determine what they prefer. If you pay close enough attention, they will share their preference with you and make it known.

Meeting Your Dogs Nutritional Needs

When it comes to your pet's nutritional needs, this starts early in life. In fact, it starts are soon as they are born. Puppies grow fast - some much faster than others. As they grow, there digestive and immune systems are developing at the same time, which means they have very different nutritional needs from an adult dog. A good diet, can make all the difference to whether or not your puppy grows into a strong and healthy dog, which is why it's so important.

First month of life: during that first month, a puppy starts off with their mothers' milk. They are packed in with their siblings, suckling from their mother and enjoying all the nutritional benefits that come with it. Of course, there comes a time they need to be weaned off the milk, while ensuring their nutritional needs are still being met.

Two to four months: by this age, they are needing four meals a day. Puppies do enjoy playing with their food - just like human babies! You need to encourage them to eat it by sitting with them and dipping your finger into it to share with them (don't worry, you don't need to actually taste it yourself!). They need calcium, phosphorus and Vitamin D in their diet to help with their develop skeletal structure.

Four to seven months: by now, your puppy is likely to be a pro at eating. They have discovered just how good food is (especially is you have a Royal Canin dog) and they are starting to put on a healthy amount of weight. If you have any cancers about your pet, you can always seek out your vet for help. That's what they're there for. At this age, they need lots of protein to give them the energy to do what they do best - be puppies! It is also nice and easy for them to digest.

10 months and beyond: that puppy stage is certainly fleeting! Before you know it, your beloved puppy will have turned into a fun-loving dog, running your household. Each breed will come with their own nutritional needs, so it's important to do a little research into your own pet. The right diet can make a huge difference when it comes to raising a healthy dog.

How To Help Your Dog Maintain A Healthy Weight

At the end of the day, your dog's weight comes down to you as the owner. It is important for you to manage their weight control and ensure they remain as healthy as possible. Between 25% and 40% of dogs are overweight, yet most owners don't realise it until they take them for a check up at the vet. While tailored nutrition is a great start, here are some more tips to help you out:

  1. Keep them active: dogs need to get out for walks as often as possible. Of course, you have your own life to work around. Make sure you factor in at least one walk a day, even if it is a simple 10 minute stroll around the block. For more active breeds, it can help to pop them in the car and take them to the dog park so they can run off their energy.
  2. Take a look at who feeds your dog and when: in a household where there are a number of different people, it can happen that your dog ends up overfed. Keep a sheet of paper on the fridge, listing out meals and treats. Tick it off once given, so others know not to double up or go overboard on the treats.
  3. Cut down on the treats: I know, I know, we all love to spoil out dogs. But if your dog is overweight, then the treats need to go. Instead, make up for it in affection. Give them plenty of cuddles, pats and play time with you to make up for the lack of treats they are getting. They won't even notice they're gone...

As dogs get older, their metabolism can slow down, just like with us humans. As you might expect, you need to pay closer attention to their weight later in life. It can creep on without you noticing. There are also some breeds of dogs that are more prone to putting on weight. For example, Chihuahuas, Beeagles, Dachsunds, Labradors, Pugs and Bulldogs. If ever in doubt, book in a trip to your vet and voice your concerns with them.
